Shut-the-Box is a traditional game of counting, addition, and probability. Dating back to the 18th century, this game was enjoyed by Norman fishermen after a long day at sea. This improved wood version with a felt playing surface will bring the old century charm to your home! Roll the dice and lay down any numerical combination of tiles that match your roll. Just keep on rolling until you can no longer match your roll on the remaining tiles. The lowest score wins the game. If you lay down all the tiles, then you've "shut the box." Can be played with any number of players.

I decided to purchase this for two reasons. I remember playing this as a kid and having so much fun with it. I also bought it as one of the family games to take to a relative's house over the holidays. It was an instant hit! Those that remembered playing it before were excited to play again and those that had never played were instantly addicted. It's perfect for solo play when you just have a few minutes, or to pass around the table at large gatherings. The box on this model is very sturdy, yet it's still small enough to easily take along in the car. I much prefer the 1 through 12 model to the ones with only 9 or 10 numbers. My grandchildren love playing this game and it helps them think (math). My ten-year-old granddaughter, Morgan, actually "shut the box." I had her carve her name and the date on the side of the wooden box. So far, none of her cousins or any others have had their names carved in the side of the wooden box! Makes for great competition. This is a great family game that can be enjoyed with children who can add, all the way to Grandparents. We sat at a reunion of 17 people including adults and children and passed it around for hours. The kids will come in and just pick it up and start playing. When my Grandchildren took it to Show & Tell, the teacher asked for one to keep in the room for all to use.
