Classic Football Handheld Game from Mattel

Mattel's 1977 handheld electronic football game proved a surprise hit that spawned numerous imitators. This replica (now with the word "classic" in the title) is a fun, inexpensive shot of nostalgia, though its design will be lost on new pigskin fans because this isn't so much football, but a football-like exercise. The object of the game is to control a lone running back around LED defenders--little red dashes, to be precise--to get first downs on the way to a touchdown, or at least a field goal. Players anticipate the moves of the computer-controlled defenders to slide through gaps without being tackled. It plays as much like Space Invaders as football, but that simplicity makes it hypnotically fun. The same cheesy beeps trumpet tackles, kickoffs, and touchdowns. The game runs on two AA batteries (not included) and measures 6 by 3.5 by 1 inches, which should easily fit in any pair of hands. --Porter B. Hall

My brother had this game when he was a teenage he is now 37 years old. So when I saw this back on the market I had to get one for myself to bring back those memories. I showed this game to my brother and he laugh and ask me can he have the game. I laugh at him. Great game. -- Bring back memories
It seems like yesterday, or should I say some 21 years ago since my elder brother gave me the Original Mattel Football Game for Christmas... I played that game like a whiz. NEVER GOT BORED WITH IT!! I challenged everybody in the neighborhood and it was like you being the "Electronic Gridiron Ace".

Unfortunately... I lost that game and I was so Heart-Broken! It seems ironic, 20 years later, one day, I made a bank deposit... when suddenly, I saw an old high school buddy and his kid playing with a Mattel Classic Football Game and it brought me back memories...in fact, it was so funny, I also gave the child tips on how to dodge defenders to score a TOUCHDOWN! I soon found out about the Amazon.com website, then saw the game... Wow! I brung a tear in my eye... then, with the click of a mouse, I purchased one... since then, I played the game... and I haven't lost my touch! Just like goin' back to Memory Lane!!!

Thanks Mattel and Amazon.com for rekindling the nostalgia!!! -- Goin' back to Memory Lane!!!

i saw this advertisement and thought it was the vintage page!!!i used to play this game as a kid in the seventies and wore out batteries. it's not like the games of today and the graphics ...but i loved this game!!!!i always wished i had the other games and now i could if wanted to!!! definitely a toy for the over 30 crowd. -- short trip to childhood
Mattel has taken me back to my childhood. I remember playing this game when I was 10 (I'm 35 right now). My friend owned the game, and everytime I'd visit, I'd ask to play the game or borrow it and take it home to play.

As the title of my review states, "Don't buy this game for your child." Reason is simple. They won't appreciate the simplicity of the game. Children today expect alot for a game. With GameBoy Advance and your various X-Boxes, PlayStations, GameCubes...etc...etc. Electronic Football couldn't even complete. The game is more geared for the 30+ year old boys in your life that wax for the simple days of their childhood.

The controls are pretty much how I remember it for the exception of the game selector switch. I distinctly remember the switch being metal, instead of the black plastic switch Mattel has replaced it with.
Mattel also replaced the power source of the game with AAA batteries instead of a 9-volt battery of yesteryear. I'm not sure if Mattel had struck a deal with battery manufactuers, since AAA don't have half the life expectancy as a more durable 9-volt battery. I've been able to play off and on for 3 weeks with the Football game before I noticed performance degregation with the game.

So, if you want to take your love one back to the days of his/her childhood, by all means, spend a few bucks on this great trip down memory lane. -- Don't buy this for the child under 30 child in your life.
